Jackie Pit Bull Terrier Adult - Adoption, Rescue for sale in Canterbury, Connecticut

One of the saddest examples of our cultural drop-the-proverbial-ball, when it comes to Bullies, is the "Throw Away Mama." This unflattering term has come to designate female Bullies, who have been repeatedly bred, as unwitting contributors to the vast Bully overpopulation problem.

Unlucky Jackie was surrendered, at the age of five, to NYCACC officers with a claim that the owner was moving to a non-dog friendly locale. It was obvious at shelter intake, that Jackie had been haphazardly bred numerous times, and in fact was still lactating when she was dropped off. The surrender process is extremely upsetting to most dogs and brings out their worst fears. Despite the traumatic changes, Jackie sailed through her intake, making friends at every turn.

Jackie was a cooperative sweetheart during her vet exam, and SAFER evaluation, earning good evaluations in both areas. Shelter contacts recommended that she could be placed in just about any kind of home with great success. And still, with all the accolades, as well as the outpouring of fan mail from the internet, Jackie found herself on the Euthanasia list.

Once she was released to us, she continued to show a delightful personality and balanced nature. Jackie doesn't have the over-the-top energy that we see so often in other Bully breeds. She has a relatively calm demeanor and is easy to handle on lead. She would be an excellent choice for a novice Bully owner.

Of course, Bullies are higher energy than most dog breeds, so even though Jackie is calm for a Bully, she still needs sufficient exercise to be happy. She has a strong, yet nimble physique, and is at an ideal weight of 58 pounds. Her coat is short and manageable: she is mostly white with strategically-placed brown patches. And to complete her signature look, Jackie has one blue eye!

Jackie loves the outdoors, and enjoys her walks even in the harsh weather. She would be an ideal walking companion, and would do well with one to two brisk leash walks each day, plus focussed playtime and obedience work. She has had little formal obedience training, but is beginning to grasp the basics nicely. She has begun her Canine Good Citizen program and impresses us every day. Adopters should continue her program, and develop her full potential. Bullies as loving as a Jackie should be the Breed Ambassadors.

Jackie could join just about any kind of home. She is generally well behaved, and friendly to all. Although she is fairly easy to handle, she may overwhelm toddlers, but she'd be fine with older children and other well behaved dogs, and possibly cats.

As an adult dog coming from an owner's home, Jackie has excellent house manners, and is well past the puppy mayhem stage. She is house trained and crate trained, although adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that may occur as she adjusts to a new routine. Jackie is a calm car passenger, and behaves well in public.

Jackie is spayed, has been vaccinated for Rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). She has had the 4snap test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been microchipped and dewormed.
